the origin

In 2018, Bike City Theatre Company was commissioned by the City of Davis to create an original piece of theater for young audiences to promote bike safety and the Safe Routes to School program. Playwright Jade Gregg, lyricist Johnny Quesada, and composer Elizabeth Weidner wrote a new musical incorporating original songs teaching bicycle safety in a memorable and engaging way to Davis area students.

The Story

Light the Way: A Bicycle Safety Musical is inspired by the true story of Annie Londonderry. In 1895 she was the first woman to ride around the world on a bicycle. In our play, Annie travels from the United States to London, Spain, Saigon, and Japan, trying to beat the misguided villains, MacMillan and Von Drais, while making friends with historic figures and learning about:

  • The A, B, Cs--Air, Brakes, Chain

  • Traffic signals and 4 way stops

  • The necessity of helmets!

  • Riding at night with a light

  • Basic hand signals
